Changes for Reporting R&D Claims

If you have previously made claims for Research and Development (R&D) reliefs, you will be familiar with reporting these on your corporation tax returns (CT600). If you use TaxCalc, you will know that we include some automation, in the form of ‘wizards’, to assist with calculations and populating the correct boxes.

How has the reporting of R&D reliefs changed?

HMRC has introduced new CT600 supplementary pages to complete for Research and Development Expenditure Credit (RDEC) and R&D enhanced expenditure (SME scheme) claims. The supplementary pages (CT600L) will be required by HMRC for all CT600 returns filed on or after 6 April 2021.

How will the changes take place in TaxCalc?

We will be implementing the supplementary pages (CT600L) in our TaxCalc 2021 release, in readiness for CT600s being filed on or after 6 April and as an option to use prior to that date.

After the TaxCalc 2021 release (due in March), you will have the option of using the supplementary pages for completing your R&D claims, however, these will not be able to be filed until HMRC’s online filing system has been updated on 6 April 2021. Alternatively, the usual RDEC and SME enhanced expenditure wizards will be available to use and these will populate existing boxes for R&D claims on the main CT600. Please note, however, that using our current wizards will require you to file the return before 6 April.

For CT600 returns created in TaxCalc on or after 6 April, the supplementary pages will be mandatory and the current RDEC wizard will be unavailable. This is because the new pages reflect the entries in the current wizard and we will be providing automation to help you complete these entries on the face of the pages. The SME enhanced expenditure wizards will still be available and will populate the supplementary pages, where required.

How will I know what to do when I have already created CT600s in TaxCalc?

We have included messaging to explain the options you have and to ensure the process is clear for filing the correct requirements, dependent upon the date you intend to file. As usual, our online Help will be available to assist with specific box entries. Our Knowledgebase articles will also be updated for the new entries once the pages are available for use in your software.
