Verdict: Few new features, but a solid, inexpensive program that remains the best tax return software for individuals.
The Inland Revenue's push towards online tax filing has spawned a clutch of third-party tax return tools and Acorah Software's TaxCalc Personal is our current favourite, allowing you to submit up to six tax returns.
TaxCalc offers a wider choice of forms than the Revenue's own web-based online service. As well as the standard individual, partnership and trust returns, TaxCalc adds a clutch of others, such as Lloyd's Underwriters, not available through the Revenue's service. read more...

There's not much IT can do to prolong your lifespan, but software such as Taxcalc 2008 can help when it comes to taxes.
An official HMRC partner product, the version of Taxcalc we tried was Personal 6, which enables up to six individual returns to be made for the 2007/08 tax year. read more...

Verdict: Excellent tax software makes it easy to upload returns without relying on the Revenue's website.
It's happy days for third-party tax programs. With the fiasco early this year - when HM Revenue and Customs' website was rendered unavailable for days - still fresh in the mind, many users are re-evaluating the Revenue's own online submission tools. This excellent alternative will be one of the first to benefit.
There may be big changes to the 2008 self-assessment forms, but TaxCalc 2008 Personal 6, which covers the SA100 return and its supplementary pages as well as Partnership, Trust, Companies and the R40 repayment forms, retains a familiar look. read more...
